Gather ‘Round the Fires of Consciousness to Explore and Share Awareness
Dear Ones,
If I were to dream up a book that had all the elements in consciousness that I most delight in, Jitterbug Perfume has them all! It has provoking spiritual truths (ferreted out by humorously exposing religious dogma and lies), that are woven in with acerbic and brilliant humor, complex puns and literary allusions, outrageous metaphors and compelling characters who truly have something to say, from which I can benefit and grow my own awareness!! That is the highest accolade I can give a book! On top of all that I learned so much about the nature and power of scent and its alchemical history as an “opener of the way” and teacher of awareness. Through the characters, I became familiar with beings who demonstrate an immense sensitivity to the Realm of Scent and in the process of that discovery, I began to get a glimpse of the process by which sacred oils are distilled and made.
The story pivots around beets, (yes beets) scent and the great God Pan which may appear disparate, but Tom Robbins’ brilliant weaving made them into a seamless whole of immaculate beauty, delight, and illumination! His literary investigation into the nature of “desire” alone was enough for a high recommendation to any spiritual adventurers!
AND A WARNING:
In the bigger picture, this book is about the evolution of consciousness through the lensing of scent. In the closer up view, the death of the archetypal Nature God, Pan, lenses everything through what could be viewed as a crass, crude, raw use of language, which could well curl the hair of some feminists as sexually demeaning and vulgar. I had to overlook that particular take on it, to continue reading it to understand why Tom Robbins, a highly intellectual and balanced masculine being would employ such language. (So if you hold a puritanical view point, this book could upset you, unless you can suspend judgment and like myself, see what is worth taking in, beyond that language and view point..)
