The True Story of Chevron’s Ecuador Disaster Over three decades of drilling in the Ecuadorian Amazon resulted in Chevron dumping more than 16 billion gallons of toxic wastewater, using practices that were illegal in Ecuador and the U.S. After years of delay tactics by Chevron’s army of attorneys, Chevron was found guilty in 2011 and ordered to pay $9 billion to clean up their mess. Chevron appealed to the Ecuadorian Supreme Court, which in 2013 upheld the judgment against them. To this day, Chevron hasn’t paid a dime and continues its legal shenanigans to avoid taking any responsibility. Can you imagine an individual getting away with this, especially a BIPOC? Absolutely not, but corporations around the world are using Chevron’s playbook to vilify activists and attorneys and avoid taking responsibility for their bad behavior.
